Blue. adj. [blæƿ, Sax. bleu, Fr.] One of the seven original colours.

                There's gold, and here,
My bluest veins to kiss; a hand that kings
Have lipt.
Shakesp. Antony and Cleopatra.

Where fires thou find'st unrak'd, and hearths unswept,
There pinch the maids as blue as bilberry.
Shakesp. Merry Wives of Windsor.

O coward conscience! how dost thou afflict me?
The lights burn blue - Is it not dead midnight?
Cold fearful drops stand on my trembling flesh.
Shakesp. Richard III.

Why does one climate, and one soil endue
The blushing poppy with a crimson hue;
Yet leave the lily pale, and tinge the violet blue?

Prior.

There was scarce any other colour sensible, besides red and blue; only the blues, and principally the second blue, inclined a little to green. Newton's Opticks.
