Downloading Dictionary Data

This website is configured to permit download of only limited quantities of data, although the amount which can be readily downloaded is more than sufficient for almost all research purposes. Regardless of your purpose, as a condition of your use of the website, you agree you will not use this site to gain access to and/or download a significant amount of dictionary data. It is explicitly prohibited to use this website to systematically download large amounts of our data. You must ensure that your use of this Dictionary website does not breach these conditions of use, especially with regards to quantity of data accessed and reproduction or transmission of such data.

Obtaining Substantial Dictionary Data for Research

Text of first (1755) folio edition

The Lexicons of Early Modern English project (LEME) provided a transcribed, XML-encoded text of Samuel Johnson’s 1755 folio edition of A Dictionary of the English Language under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license. Although the encoded text they provided differs from what is available from our project online, and although we have promised not to release their text outside of this project, we can put you in touch with LEME to discuss possible uses of their original text.

Facsimile images

Images of individual entries are derivative of full-page image scans of public domain works. However, if you are using images from the Johnson’s Dictionary Online, please credit the site using the citation recommendations on the How to Cite page.
